Watkins Records First Legislative Victory

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Steve Watkins' (KS-02) first piece of legislation, ‘the Fort Scott National Historic Site Boundary Modification Act’, which takes a massive leap forward in preserving Fort Scott’s rich history and pivotal role in the Civil War era, passed the House today and will be heading to the President’s desk for signature. Congressman Watkins issued the following statement:

“I am thrilled to see the bipartisan Lands Package pass the House today. This bipartisan package includes my timely legislation protecting and enhancing the Fort Scott National Historic Site in Fort Scott, Kansas. By allowing the Park Service to incorporate a local historic Union Army structure, this legislation solidifies the Fort Scott community’s contribution toward preserving our Union during the Civil War era. 

I would like to thank my colleagues in the Kansas House and Senate delegation for joining me in backing this legislation. Their support has been critical in recognizing the importance of Fort Scott’s legacy and ensuring the protection and identity of the community in perpetuity. 

This thoughtful legislation provides much-needed security and certainty for the heritage of the Fort Scott community, and I look forward to the President signing this legislation into law.” Said Congressman Watkins.
